Let’s look at group defending. Defending is our bread and butter and the one aspect that I require you to follow my way of thinking at your level of experience. You are expected to bring your creativity to the attack side while following our Principles of Play, but defending is where I look to have more structure for now.
The video begins with a general discussion on the roles of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defenders. This is a great outline. But pay close attention to the section specific to the 3rd defenders that begins at the 1:22 mark. Notice the highlights used. See the hips forward and understanding of not only the ball but the position of the attackers as well. This is Marking, Covering, and Tracking. These are some of our basic defensive concepts. Know this.
Check out the flick pass after the tackle at 2:47. Love it!
This section is very well done. Yes, there is a great deal covered, but take the time to watch it a few times during the week. No one on this team, including the attackers, does not defend. Every player must defend efficiently and effectively because once we win the ball we ALL attack.
