Now it’s time to look at individual defending. I want you to review the “Set Position” (Press to Play) for good defending. This is key to our philosophy of positioning our hips towards the opponent’s goal, being relaxed, and calculating the position of the ball, the opponents, your teammates, and how they relate to our goal. All of this boils down to one thing: The mathematics of soccer. We want the percentages in our favor.
This video is 12 minutes in length, but it’s packed with important information. Stay with it. Take the time to watch it a couple times today and come back to it again as the week progresses. This is your investment in this team and your future as a soccer player.
Heck, the entire lesson can be boiled down to the opening video examples of quality 1v1 defending. Check out the balance, quick feet, and tenacity of the defenders. Each of these defensive stops is a prime example of what we strive for. Of special note early in the video, the female announcer describes the difference between a clean tackle and a foul. Flagrant fouls will not be tolerated on this team. Your butt will rest securely on the bench if I feel that you have defended out of frustration rather than the situation.
In summary, this is my favorite lesson thus far because there is a great deal of important information here. By now, you’ve learned how to watch these video lessons by not just watching for enjoyment, but to LISTEN and OBSERVE as a student of the game.
